About the artist

In 1935, Robèr paid a brief visit to Paris, where he was fascinated by a new technique devised by Oscar Domínguez and André Breton. A technique championed by a number of Surrealists, involving the creation of a single print based on the controlled use of a random form. The result, with its thrilling beauty and oppressive inscrutability, functions as a modern reinterpretation of Hercules Seghers.
Robèr was rarely idle, and his active mind guided his hands, which discovered much and retained the best. Robér’s work is included in the collections of, amongst others: Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Chabot Museum, Rotterdam; Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem; Rijks Prentenkabinet, Amsterdam; University Print Room, Leiden; and the Centraal Museum, Utrecht.
