About the artist
Like Mondrian, Albert Fiks (1908–1945) grew up in Amersfoort; and like his great role model, his work followed a path from naturalism to abstraction.
He was impressed by the modern innovations in painting not only of Mondrian, but also of Bart van der Leck and Vilmos Huszár, and consequently sought to simplify his subjects himself. Albert Fiks’s work never became entirely abstract, but stylisation and abstraction came to characterise his painting and drawing. Fiks reached his artistic peak in the period 1930–1940 with his often colourful Cubist and abstract still lifes.
Sadly, the painter did not live to a ripe old age. He died at the age of thirty-seven from blood poisoning. Nevertheless, Albert Fiks left behind a versatile and high-quality body of work.
