About the artist
Picasso is perhaps the greatest artist of the 20th century.
With the money Picasso received for his paintings, he was able to afford a rental apartment at 11 Boulevard de Clichy in the fall of 1909. He moved in there with Fernande, who signed her letters at the time as “Mrs. Picasso.” Although he also had a studio in that house, he soon returned to painting at the Bateau Lavoir, where he had other women pose for him. He fell in love with Marcelle Humbert, whom he called Eva Gouel. Picasso’s love for Eva is evident in many of his Cubist works. Picasso was deeply affected by her untimely death in 1915 due to illness, at the age of 30.
