About the artist
Geert van Fastenhout (1935–2016) studied at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten and the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs in Amsterdam, as well as at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris.
He initially worked in a figurative style, but since the early 1970s, after visiting an exhibition of Ad Reinhart’s work at the Van Abbemuseum, he developed a style entirely his own, within the tradition of geometric abstraction.
His symmetrical compositions are constructed from a few rectangular, adjacent color fields and bands in subtle color shades.
Once a year he travelled for some weeks to Japan and South-Korea where he exhibited in varoius galleries. His paintings were often placed in a Tokonoma- a shrine.
