About the artist

Agnes Maes was a Flemish-Belgian painter and visual artist, born in Aarsele and died in Deinze.

As the only female member, she was part of the Belgian offshoot of “The New Figuration,” namely “The New Vision.”
Under the guidance of Roger Raveel, her indeterminacy—her oscillation within the fascinating void between signifier and signified—makes her work profoundly honest. This results in an especially poignant outcome because she employs a dated medium. Through her work, Agnes Maes demonstrates that painting possesses an incredible will to survive and is inherently capable of existing in the in-between.
