About the artist
Starting in 1913, he lived in Paris for several years before returning to the Netherlands around 1916, where he settled in Het Gooi (Eemnes). It was here that Beekman would work according to the principles of De Stijl.
Around 1930, Beekman moved to Amsterdam, where communism and politics became increasingly visible in his work. He lent his work to several anti-fascist exhibitions. He also painted, drew, and etched works that depicted the lives of workers. During and after the war, he created works that also portrayed the resistance. For example, he painted a portrait of the resistance fighter Hannie Schaft.
