About the artist
As a member of the ‘Branding’ an theosophical movement, he created this as early as 1918. In 1935, Robèr paid a brief visit to Paris, where he was fascinated by a new technique developed by Oscar Domínguez and André Breton. A technique propagated by a number of Surrealists, in which only a single print is made, based on the controlled use of a random form. The result, with its thrilling beauty and oppressive inscrutability, functions as a modern reinterpretation of Hercules Seghers.
Robèr was rarely idle, and his active mind guided his hands, which discovered much and retained the best. Robér’s work is included in the collections of, amongst others: Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Chabot Museum, Rotterdam; Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem; Rijks Prentenkabinet, Amsterdam; University Print Room, Leiden; and the Centraal Museum, Utrecht.
