About the artist
In 1958, Armitage had a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale and won the David E. Bright Foundation Award. In 1962, he participated again in the Venice Biennale (alongside sculptors such as Henry Moore, Reg Butler, Eduardo Paolozzi, William Turnbull, Bernard Meadows, and Lynn Chadwick). In 1962, the Kröller-Müller Museum acquired his 1961 work *Monitor*. Armitage’s work, which had initially been inspired by sculptors such as Alberto Giacometti and Pablo Picasso, had already evolved into a more expressionistic, personal style, more akin to that of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.
