About the artist
Hartung was elected a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts in 1956 and was invited to participate in the documenta in Kassel three times: 1 (1955), II (1959), and III (1964). In 1957, he received the Rubens Prize from the City of Siegen, and in 1960, he was awarded the painting prize at the Venice Biennale. During 1962 and 1963, his work was featured in retrospective exhibitions in Zurich, Vienna, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, and Brussels. Hartung was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France in 1977, and in 1980 the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris organized a retrospective exhibition of his complete body of etchings and lithographs. That same year, the French newspaper La Poste issued a postage stamp featuring an image of one of Hartung’s paintings.
