About the artist
In 1906, Villon (a pseudonym for Jacques Duchamp and brother of Marcel) settled in Puteaux and ventured into a tentative form of Cézanne-inspired Cubism. From 1911 onwards, in the Puteaux studio, Villon emerged as the leader of the Section d’Or group, alongside his brothers and Albert Gleizes, František Kupka, Albert Metzinger, Francis Picabia and Fernand Léger. Within this Puteaux group, synthetic Cubism reigned supreme. In 1912, all the canvases he submitted were sold to the American public at the Armory Show. In 1956, he was commissioned to produce the cartoons for five stained-glass windows in the Sacré-Coeur chapel of Metz Cathedral.
Villon described himself as a Cubist Impressionist. He died at the age of 87.
