Provenance and literature
The influence of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism is evident in the paintings he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1906. Cubism became increasingly prominent, particularly after 1909 at the Le Bateau-Lavoir studios. It was here that he met Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Juan Gris. He was also friends with the German art critic and collector Wilhelm Uhde. Auguste Herbin’s work was exhibited in the same space as that of Jean Metzinger, Albert Gleizes and Fernand Léger at the Salon des Indépendants in 1910 and in 1912 at the Section d’Or.
After Herbin produced his first abstract paintings in 1917, he came into contact with Léonce Rosenberg, who, after the First World War, was part of a group of artists at the Galerie de l'Effort Moderne. His works were exhibited there in 1918 and 1921. Cubism, with its basic geometric shapes such as the circle, triangle, rectangle and trapezium, became his signature style after 1926. In 1931, he co-founded the artists’ group Abstraction-Création in Paris with Georges Vantongerloo and others.
