About the artist
Shara Hughes (b. 1981, Atlanta) uses dizzying brushwork, vibrant colours and shifting perspectives to create paintings that break with many of the established conventions of the landscape genre. Natural motifs and patterned elements recur throughout Hughes’s paintings: serpentine trees, floating moons, distorted reflections in water and dotted night skies appear in various variations, synchronised with more elusive forms in which abstract and figurative impulses coexist in unorthodox harmony. Hughes rarely uses reference images; instead, she translates the psychological complexity of her inner world into lush and layered compositions.
