About the artist

In 2004, Viola created the video art for a striking production of Richard Wagner’s opera *Tristan und Isolde*, in collaboration with director Peter Sellars and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. This version premiered at the Opéra national de Paris in 2005 and has since been performed at many opera houses.
In May 2014, at the request of the dean of the cathedral, Viola installed a piece titled “Martyrs” in Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London.
Bill Viola has exhibited his work at the most prominent venues for visual art. His work explores central human themes such as birth, death, love, emotion, and a kind of humanistic spirituality.
