About the artist
Dorothée (Dora) Tuynman (Montpellier, 13 April 1926 – Deventer, 11 July 1979) was a Dutch artist.
In early 1952, Tuynman arrived in the wintry Rue Santeuil, Paris, to visit Karel Appel. Bram Bogart, who also lived there, took her under his wing. The determined Tuynman found her way in Paris. She took part in three salons: the Salon de Mai, the Salon de la Jeune Peinture and the Salon des Realités Nouvelles. Until 1957, Dora mainly painted landscapes and gardens in a highly abstract style. From 1958, abstract human figures were introduced, and later still she moved away from figuration. From 1970, figurative elements returned to her work.
Tuynman never presented herself as belonging to the Cobra movement. Nevertheless, Tuynman’s work is unmistakably related to Cobra. However, in her various periods, she displays a style quite distinct from that of the Cobra artists. Posthumously, she is generally regarded as a member of Cobra.
