About the artist

Fascinated by the painters Solano, Ribera, and Zurbarán, Rüpp
moved to Spain in 1992. In the early years following this period, his work
remained oriented toward the world around us, though a sense of alienation
from that reality remained central.
After studying other ways of creating images, such as in more
Oriental cultures, Rüpp gradually developed his own concept for his
canvases. The composition of the paintings is built up using multiple layers
of oil paint. An underlayer is created using a pigment that has fallen out of use.
Once this is dry, other colors and additional layers are applied.
Using the sfumato technique, some outlines are made blurry
again.
