About the artist
After the war, Charchoune contributed actively to various Dadaist magazines and became friends with Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp. In 1921, he broke with Cubism and moved to Berlin for a time, where he painted ornamental Cubist works and met Ivan Puni and El Lissitzky. There he became acquainted with movements such as Suprematism and Constructivism. He exhibited at Herwarth Walden’s Der Sturm gallery, among others, and took part in the Erste Russische Kunstausstellung. In 1923, Charchoune returned to Paris, where, through Amédée Ozenfant, he came under the influence of Purism. He became a member of the artists’ groups Cercle et Carré and Abstraction-Création. His work was included in major museum collections and in 1967 he exhibited at the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris. Charchoune died in 1975 in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges.
