About the artist
Johannes Jacobus (Jan J.) Schoonhoven (Hof van Delft, June 26, 1914 – Delft, July 31, 1994) was a Dutch visual artist. He was a member of the Dutch Nul movement. Schoonhoven worked from 1946 until his retirement in 1979 at the Central Buildings Department of (the then-state-owned company) PTT. His artistic practice thus took place in the evenings and on his free weekends.
Around 1956–57, he began creating his very first monochromatic white reliefs, no longer in paint but in papier-mâché, in order to achieve a tactile quality in his work. The emphasis on the material was already palpable in the artistic atmosphere at the time, which he recognized, among other things, in the impasto abstract paintings of Bram Bogart, which inspired him. [3] From this point on, Schoonhoven used pieces of corrugated cardboard, papier-mâché, and many toilet paper rolls as materials for his artworks. These were affixed to a plywood base. The forms in these early reliefs were created according to geometric principles.
